1888 Becks Run Pumping Station
The Becks Run Pumping Station, located at 4702 Carson Street in Baldwin Borough, was critical to providing water service to the region. The building houses the intake facilities which draw up to 60 million gallons per day (MGD) of water a day from the Monongahela River.
1900 J&L Mill Southside
The Jones and Laughlin Steel Company began as the American Iron Company, founded in 1852 by Bernard Lauth and B. F. Jones, a few miles south of Pittsburgh along the Monongahela River. Lauth's interest was bought in 1854 by James H. Laughlin. The first firm to bear the name of Jones and Laughlin was organized in 1861 and headquartered at Third & Ross in downtown Pittsburgh.Katherine Hepburn's maternal uncle--Frank Garlinghouse was a longtime engineer for J&L Steel.
1958 Page Dairy Mart Explosion
In February 1958, a lit cigarette triggered a leaking gas line and blew out the walls of the Page Dairy Mart on the corner of Becks Run Road and Carson Street. For actual footage of the explosion, view our videos page!
